Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart‘s birth house

In the heart of Salzburg, Getreidegasse, is the very house that Leopold Mozart moved into with his wife Anna Maria Walburga in 1747. For 26 years the Mozart family lived in the apartment on the 3rd floor. Seven of Mozart‘s children were born here, of whom only two survived childhood: In 1751 Maria Anna Walburga (known as „Nannerl“) and on 27th January 1756 Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus (Wolfgang Amadeus).

Today the house has been set up as a museum spanning three storeys. The main features are Mozart's original instruments and authentic portraits. Also exhibited are Salzburg furniture and everyday objects from Mozart‘s era.

Among other matters, exhibits and special events ensure that at the „original setting“, the life of the Mozart family is vivid and current.

Up close to the genius loci on the Mozartplatz!

In the heart of the Mozartplatz there a famous statue, which, in the presence of Mozart‘s sons, was unveiled on the 5th September 1842 by the architect, Ludwig Schwanthaler.

The Mozart memorial (whose location was initially disputed) today shows the route into the well-known shopping streets in Salzburg – it was here that 250 years Mozart did his shopping! Mozartplatz is also worth visiting in terms of gastronomy too: On Mozartplatz you will find one of the best known coffee houses in Salzburg, from where you get a superb view of the master.

Is there any more ideal a place for music? At Mozartplatz 4, „Antretter Haus“, houses the ‚Institute for Musicology‘, part of the University of Salzburg.
