Hohensalzburg Fortress

The landmark in the heart of the Mozart city

Fantastic inner courtyards, inviting terraces and a picturesque palace fountain give you a sense of medieval times.

Above the towers in the Mozart city...

The city‘s impressive emblem soars above the towers in the Mozart city: The 900 year-old Hohensalzburg fortress is Europe‘s biggest and best maintained castle complex area! In the middle ages, the fortress built by Archbishop Gebhard during the Investiture Controversy in 1077 served to protect the clergy and the people.

The fortress is accessible from Kapitelplatz through the Festungsgasse, from here you can either take the Festungsbahn (runs every 10 minutes), or walk up to the fortress in about 30 minutes. Once you get to the top you can enjoy a superb view to the city and the country areas of Salzburg.

The Fortress card

The best course of action is to experience the full array on offer to visitors with the Fortress card: As part of a guided tour of the palace by way of state-of-the-art audio -guides (in eight languages) you get to see the unique regency rooms, the Salzburger Stier (500 year old barrel organ), battlement walks, the torture chamber, the Romanic lower chapel (11th century) and the palace chapel, in which marriage ceremonies also take place. Burg- und Rainer Regimentsmuseum, an impressive multi-visual exhibition and a puppet museum complete the range on offer for visitors.

Afterwards, the castle restaurant, which has two shaded guest gardens and fantastic views right across the inner city area of Salzburg, invites you to relax and unwind. The well-known and popular fortress concerts are held in the stylish setting of the Fürstenzimmer.

Our Reception team are available for you should you require additional information.
