Mondsee basilica inspires, with and without the Sound of Music! Since pictures of this special building went around the globe with the American film and musical „The Sound of Music“, overseas tourists have been attracted to St. Michael's parish church. It was elevated to basilica status in 2005 and was extensively refurbished up until 2009.

The world-wide renown enjoyed by the basilica is down to one very special scene that was filmed in Mondsee: The wedding scene, where Georg Ludwig von Trapp (played by Christopher Plummer) marries novitiate Maria (Julie Andrews).

Benedictine Abbey Church

St. Michael's parish church in Mondsee is worth visiting to see it as one of the special heritage buildings in Austria, regardless of „The Sound of Music“: The unique Benedictine Abbey Church is one of the biggest Gothic churches in Austria and has a superb interior.

After a chequered, pre-Romanesque building phases, today's Gothic church was built in the 15th Century under Abbot Benedikt Eck; it is part of the monastery founded by Odilo Duke of Bavaria, in 748. Responsible for the magnificent, Baroque interior of the church in the late 17th Century was the famous Baroque sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler – one of the most significant sculptors of the Baroque period, who through Swiss-born, lived in Mondsee for over 44 years.
